Description

Bill of sale dated December 23, 1847 for a Negro man named Andrew sold for a term of 5 years by Michael Pue of the Howard District of Anne Arundel County, Maryland, executor of Dr. Arthur Pue of Baltimore City, Maryland, to James Piper of the Howard District of Anne Arundel County. The sale is in the amount of $100. Witnessed by Justice of the Peace J. (Jacob) Bradenbaugh and recorded by district clerk E. P. (Edwin Parsons) Hayden, the document identifies Andrew as age about 37 years; his service to Piper was to have started on September 19, 1847. (Editor's note: During this time period, Howard County was known as the Howard District of Anne Arundel County. Howard County was officially designated a county in 1851. What is to become of Andrew, i.e., after the 5 years was he set free or was he returned to Michael Pue or Dr. Arthur Pue?)
