Holograph, signedTitle devised by catalogerManuscript is composed upon the typeset stationary of the Orange Journal, with the header reading "Office of the Orange Journal. Oliver Johnson, Editor and Proprietor."Oliver Johnson writes William Lloyd Garrison stating that Garrison misunderstands him, and declaring that he had in fact read Garrison's article in response to Dr. Eliot, but had not read Dr. Eliot's original article. Johnson asserts that the actions of Rutherford B. Hayes since election appear to be motivated by the President's sense of patriotism, rightness, and Constitutionality. Johnson declares that Garrison is "misjudging" Hayes, as "so many thus did to Lincoln"
