Hollywood Anti-Nazi League for the Defense of American Democracy

Description

In response to the spread of organized anti-Semitism in the United States during the 1930s, leaders of Los Angeles' Jewish community formed a special defense organization known as the Los Angeles Jewish Community Committee. The committee later changed its name to the Jewish Federation Council of Greater Los Angeles, Community Relations Committee. The collection documents the committee's efforts to combat prejudice and educate the public through cooperation with both Jewish and non-Jewish groups, from its formation in 1933 through the early 1990s.This pamphlet announces "three major events in the anti-Nazi world," all taking place in the Los Angeles area in 1937. January 6: An inter-racial mass-meeting against Nazism, at the Philharmonic Auditorium at Fifth and Hill; W.E.B. Du Bois was the speaker, and Oscar Hammerstein was the meeting's chairman. January 10: A banquet was held in honor of German playwright Ernst Toller at the Vendome, 6666 Sunset Blvd.; Fritz Lang was the meeting's chairman. (Toller would commit suicide by hanging just 2 years later.) January 12: a "giant" mass meeting was held at the Shrine Auditorium, entitled "We Warn America!" Ernst Toller was among the speakers. 8.5 x 11 in.
