Description

The documents in this folder concern the community center in Meridian, Mississippi, that was staffed by James Chaney and Rita and Michael Schwerner (among others) starting in mid-January 1964. In a January 1964 letter, Matteo Suarez asks Dave Dennis of CORE to fund a community center in Meridian, Mississippi. There's a letter from Rita Schwerner to a donor of sewing materials to the community center. The project director (unnamed) of the Meridian project offers a summary of Freedom Summer activities there, T. A. Lassiter offers criticism of it (or of some similar program), and Rita Schwerner discusses its purposes and projects its future needs. Michael Schwerner's explanation of why he wants to work in Mississippi, taken from his CORE application, is here (in a more readable form than in other places).
