Regarding a letter to Walter White and discussing the event of Mr. James Weldon Johnson's having seen it before delivering an address in Pittsburgh: "you are asking me to conclude that had he seen the letter he probably would not have made the speech he did." In response to Du Bois' request, pledging he will be happy to modify his statement "as soon as I learn what statement Mr. Johnson is going to sign."
