Description
Black and white photograph of Dr. Horace Bumstead. Dr. Horace Bumstead served as president of Atlanta University from 1888 until 1907. During his leadership Atlanta University attracted Carnegie funds for the library, a university press was established, a student publicantion began, and football was introduced. Dr. Bumstead was an advocate for the education of African Americans his whole life. Atlanta University opened on October 13, 1869. The University offered training for African American students of all ages including kindergarten, grade school, normal, industrial, academy and college.
