Description

In the letter Everett urges Milton to cooperate with the governor of Alabama to provide military protection at the saltworks in West Bay, Florida: "The operatives have so long & so often been injured & annoyed by insignificant raids upon their work that, unless protection from some quarter, be afforded the business will be entirely abandoned...the salt makers wd [sic] willingly pay the expenses of the required protection & then be able to furnish salt at a lower price than at present." In a postscript Everett mentions that another raid has recently taken place: "...for the first time this year, kettles were broken, besides the usual stealing of negroes & provisions." A transcription is included.
