Description

Photograph of the official residence of the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Baltimore in Baltimore, Maryland. Located at number 408 North Charles Street, this building is situated behind and connected by a covered walkway to the Basilica of the Assumption, the first Roman Catholic Cathedral in the United States. The residence includes such architectural features as bay windows or oriels. The windows are decorated with the United States flag and with what appears to be a coat of arms, probably the coat of arms of the then Archbishop of Baltimore, James Cardinal Gibbons (1834-1921). In front of the residence (right) is a horse-drawn wagon parked on the street. A young Caucasian boy is sitting in the driver's seat, looking back to a man unloading produce from the back of the wagon. Farther up the street (left) is a young African American man standing by the curb and carrying newspapers. Two Caucasian men in top hats are standing on the walkway by a side entrance to the residence. (Maryland photograph 552. Negative provided courtesy of W. Bryant Tyrrell.)
