This document is from a collection of financial papers related to the plantation operations of several generations of the Rouzee Family in Essex County, Virginia. The papers date from the 1790s through 1860.This handwritten, single page document is an account of taxes owed the Sheriff of Essex County by the John Rouzee estate for the year 1831. The taxable property is listed as "32 slaves, 10 horses, and 1 coachee," four hundred and ninety seven and one quarter acres of land (497 1/4), six hundred and thirty nine (639) acres of land owned by the Richard Rouzee estate, and twenty three (23) county and poor levies. It noted that payment was received by Edward Rouzee on October 24, 1831. The document is signed in the bottom right by Robert Hill. Writing on the reverse notes the date and amount of payment. Both sides are written in black ink and there is a large ink spot on the reverse.Transcribed by digital volunteers
