Description

Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger.Samuel Joseph May writes William Lloyd Garrison that he has received Garrison's letter dated the 5th, and assures him that he will "bequeath it to [May's] children as a precious relic", asserting that he values Garrison's "strong assurance of [his] love" deeply. May declares his great debt to Garrison as well as to the anti-slavery cause, and writes that meeting Garrison gave his "moral and religious energies" a "new direction". May states his regrets that he was unable to visit Garrison and his wife prior to leaving Boston, but stated that the impending departure of his daughter obliged him to return home in haste. May adds that he stopped, as promised, to visit Mr. and Mrs. James Davis in Northboro, to aid them in the mourning the loss of their son Joseph, who was killed at the Battle of Chancellorsville. May asserts his pleasure at the impending visit from the Garrison's to Syracuse, and relays arrangements for meeting them upon their arrival. May adds that he shall "depend" upon Garrison's preaching in his church during his visit, and asserts his eagerness for his congregation to hear Garrison's "religious doctrines and principles".
