On the Shores of Lake Scutari. The Montenegrin peasant girls as they wash the raw wool preparatory to spinning it by hand. Wet foot means little in their lives as they wade all day long in the cold mountain water. Several of them are wearing American garments distributed to them by the American Red Cross The Florence Nightingale of Montenegro. Miss Lena M. Johnson, of Chicago and a group of children which she has found on the streets of Cettinje. They are only a few of hundreds that Miss Johnson has rescued from hunger and disease. She gained the soubriquet of "Florence Nightingale" because she has cared for 15,965 patients at the American Red Cross Hospital at Cettinje, Nicsic and Podgoritza. Miss Johnson is Chief Nurse of the Red Cross Unit in Montenegro. She was one of the Pioneer Nurses of France, having come over at the outbreak of the War and worked in Hospitals at the battle of Somme, Leos and Verdun. The trucks were driven to the last negotiable point and then taken apart and carried on the backs of eighty porters to the other side and assembled again. The work was accomplished in two days and the relief arrived on time.
