Description

“Yao head". Head portrait of a young boy with a hairstyle that comes to a peak at the front of his head. The boy is Wayao, from the Yao tribe. They are a predominately Muslim people centred around the Southern end of Lake Malawi. In the nineteenth century they traded primarily in Ivory and slaves and had close links with Arab traders.
