Congress of Racial Equality. Southern Regional Office
Description
Rita and Michael ("Mickey") Schwerner came to Meridian, Mississippi, in January 1964 to work for CORE. They set up the first community center in Mississippi. Several of Rita Schwerner's weekly reports on the vibrant community center and its activities under their supervision are included in this folder, as well as more or less weekly reports written by later project directors and correspondence between local CORE workers and their regional director, Richard Haley. The reports go from January 1964 through part of 1965 and address, among other things, the difficulty of identifying local black leaders in Meridian, the lack of support for the MFDP in Meridian, and civil rights workers' discouragement in 1965. Also included is a partial list of racial murders in the South from 1963-1965.
