Ware, Camilla

Description

Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger. On verso, the letter is addressed to "William Lloyd Garrison, Brooklyn, Conn."Camilla Ware writes to William Lloyd Garrison sending him "a thousand thanks for the Liberator, you are so kind to send me." Ware says that while at first she thought Garrison's work "belonged only to the sphere of Jackson Men," she then saw his "heroism to advocate the cause of humanity and Liberty beyond what Gen. Jackson and his coadjutors have to think of ..." Ware also congratulates Garrison "for having that great man John Q. Adams following so closely in your 'footsteps'" in his abolition work. She then discusses the demoted role of American women, who were once "so highly admired by their countrymen for their patriotism" but are now told "that women are only fit to be 'Christians' and that our 'proper sphere' is in honoring our husbands (or trying to get one) and taking none of his domestic affairs." She also tells Garrison that her "lamented father was one of your admirers and that he was an Abolitionist," who particuarly enjoyed Garrison's writings for their "boldness."
