Description
With this bill of sale, General John Fellows sells a slave woman named Ton to Theodore Sedgwick, 1 July 1777. Theodore Sedgwick (1746-1813) later successfully represented the slave Elizabeth Freeman ("Mumbet") in her suit for freedom (1781), arguing that slavery was contraindicated by the new Bill of Rights which stated that "all men are born free and equal, and have certain natural, essential, and unalienable rights."
