This issue of Mosaic features stories, interviews, artwork, and photography focused on South Boston High School alumni and their experiences after graduation. In Part 1, alumni share their experiences of college life. Mike Henry recalls the racist and impersonal treatment he encountered at Northeastern University. James Figueroa interviews Judy Perez, a Colombian immigrant and South Boston High School alumna, about her experience at Northeastern University. Sonya Blick, Aracelis Mendeu, and Stephen Robey talk to the headmaster of South Boston High School Jerome Winegar about dropout rates and lack of support for those who go on to college. Jerry Reeves talks about the Boston public school system, his path to college, and feeling overwhelmed and behind academically at Boston University. In Part 2, alumni who focused on family after high school share their experiences. John Bogacz, Daryl Boswell, Debra Calhoun, Luis Cruz, Ana Nieves, and Tina Oliver interview a young mother about the reaction of family and friends to her pregnancy, health problems after the birth, motherhood, and family support. Blick and Carol Lynch interview Marlene about balancing parenting, work, and continuing one’s education as a teen mother. Carlos Santos talks about being a teen father, preparing for the baby, and his plans for marriage in the future. Cora Brown, the parent of a teen mother, talks about helping raise her daughter’s child so that her daughter could finish her education, as well as issues of personal sacrifice, contraception, and her own experience as a teen mother.
