Floyd, John

Description

Letter, dated April 12, 1816, from Major General John Floyd to Georgia Governor David B. Mitchell (1809-1813, 1815-1817) concerning military accounts and the escape of African slaves into Indian territory (probably Seminole land) in East Florida. Floyd explains why he has been delayed in formally accounting for funds in his care, and states that he has settled several accounts against the state, including one enclosed with this letter on behalf of James Moore. Floyd expresses great concern over the ease in which a number of fugitive African slaves have escaped to Indian territory in East Florida and urges measures to be taken to prevent such activity. He views the communities of escaped African "outlaws" south of the Georgia border as a growing threat to the state's frontiers, and warns of the consequences to come if property rights are thus diminished.Digital image and encoded transcription of an original manuscript, scanned, transcribed and encoded by the Digital Library of Georgia in 2001, as part of GALILEO, funded in part by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
