Description

Solid waste landfills release air pollutants that are regulated by the Air Pollution Control Division. As the waste in a landfill decomposes, it breaks down to form landfill gases (LFGs), such as Methane (CH4 ), Carbon Dioxide (CO2), and non-methane organic compounds (NMOC). Landfills also can produce smog causing volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and air toxics, pollutants known or suspected of causing cancer and other serious health effects. Particulate Matter (PM) emissions can also be generated in the form of fugitive dust created by mobile sources (i.e., garbage trucks) traveling along paved and unpaved surfaces.
