Description

Letter from R. (Robert) Paine, a bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, to Dr. (William May) Wightman, a Methodist Episcopal minister, Chancellor of Southern University in Greensboro, Alabama, and later (1866) a bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. In this letter Paine thanks Wightman for agreeing to preach the commencement sermon and discusses a recent trip south, mentioning "the M. E. Church North" as "the very embodiment of Abolitionism". (Editor's note: This document, although not sent directly to Goucher, was among his correspondence and is thought to be one of the letters he collected for its historical value.)
