Description

Matthew Whitehead (1918-1990) was the last president of the Miner Teachers College, before it merged with Wilson Teachers College to become part of the District of Columbia Teachers College, in 1954 in the aftermath of the US Supreme Court’s landmark school desegregation case, Brown v. Board of Education (U.S., 1954). He received his MA from Columbia University, and a PhD in college administration from New York University in 1944. He taught and was assistant registrar at Howard University from the mid 1940s until 1952, when he joined Miner and served as chairman of the education division. He served as president of MTC from 1953 through 1955. He served as Dean of both graduate studies and education programs of DC Teachers College in 1954. He retired in 1972.
