Wilkes" in a piece Wilkes had composed for "The Liberator" arguing that political activity would bring about the dissolution of the Union. Jeffries contests this assertion, stating that it has been political activity which has prevented the dissolution of the Union, and arguing that absention from political activity will speed up the fragmentation of the United States
