Description

This memorial card was printed in honor of the "final liquidation of the debt of Vermont Street [Bethel] A.M.E. Church June, 1891." An illustration of the pastor at that time, John Henry Clay, appears on the card as well as an inspirational quote. At the time this card was printed, Bethel was known as Vermont Street A.M.E. Church. Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church was established in Indianapolis in 1836. As it began to grow it was known as the Indianapolis Station of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Bethel's church building at 414 West Vermont Street was built in 1869 and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. The church has been traditionally known for its outreach to the community.The Bethel A.M.E. Church Collection was funded by a 2016 grant from LSTA.
