Brown, Henry G Dorsey, Michael G

Description

Indenture (contract) of mortgage release dated August 17, 1846 from Henry G. Brown of Baltimore City, Maryland to Michael G. Dorsey of the Howard District of Anne Arundel County, Maryland for slaves named Ann Harrison and William. The loan (debt) is in the amount of $180.20. Witnessed by Justice of the Peace J. (Jacob) Bradenbaugh on August 17 and recorded by the district clerk (not signed) on September 16, the document indicates that Brown officially releases Dorsey from the debt ($180.20 plus $5, as recorded in chattel record liber J. L. M. number 1 folio 340). Among the possessions Dorsey gave for the money were two of his slaves: Ann Harrison, a black woman about age 23 years; and William, a mulatto boy age about 3 years. With fulfillment of Dorsey's debt, his slaves are returned to him. (Editor's note: During this time period, Howard County was known as the Howard District of Anne Arundel County. Howard County was officially designated a county in 1851. Why the record is not signed is not known. Based on the liber initials, the clerk is probably John L. Moore. Blank page 3 was not scanned and thus is not included.)
