Encyclopedia article about Eugene "Bull" Connor, Alabama politician primarily remembered as an icon of racial intolerance. Connor served in the Alabama legislature from 1935 to 1937 and supported legislation popular with white working-class people and unions. He served as Public Safety Commissioner in Birmingham through the 1930s, 1950s, and 1950s. He unsuccessfully ran for governor twice and was a delegate at five Democratic National Conventions.The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata.
