Description

Emigrants from New Hampshire brought by the New England Immigrating Company in 1836 were among the first settlers of Beloit. The city became an important stop on the Underground Railroad and attracted African-Americans to the area. Notable industries included the Eclipse Wind Engine Company, founded by Leonard Wheeler in 1867, and cigar manufacturing beginning in the 1870s. By 1890 Beloit was a thriving city, home to many cultural organizations and a wide variety of manufacturing interests.
