In this image, the 18th U.S. Surgeon General poses in her cap and gown for a high school graduation photograph. Regina Benjamin (b. 1956) was born in Mobile and holds both an M.D. and an M.B.A. Prior to being nominated by President Barack Obama for the position of surgeon general, Benjamin worked for the University of South Alabama and ran a health clinic for low-income people in Bayou La Batre, Alabama.
