Description

This folder contains materials collected by/about Russel N. Service. Service began his YMCA career in Buffalo, New York, at the Michigan Avenue YMCA, where he served from 1947 to 1959 as executive secretary. When he left that Y, which functioned as a center for the African American community of Buffalo, he transferred to the Bedford branch of the YMCA of Greater New York. He remained there until 1964, when he was appointed city program director and in 1968, became associate vice president for urban affairs. Russell Service left YMCA work in 1973, entering Long Island politics and becoming the first African American elected to public office in Nassau County. This folder specifically contains a brochure related to Service's work in urban affairs. The brochure is in support of Try Inc., an organization that provided job placement and training to African American and Latino youth.
