Interview with three long-time administrators at UMass Amherst . Brooks arrived in 1964 (Dean of Students, Acting Dir. of Admissions; Assoc. Dean; Dir. Visitor Relations); Melley (Class of 1955; brought back in 1962 in public relations and news bureau; Vice Chancellor for University Advancement); Venman (arr. in 1962 as Asst. to the Provost; "utility" administrator; Asst. Dean of Admissions; Continuing Education; ). "April Massacre": firing of news directors ; "Michigan mafia." Venman: birth of Continuing Education at end of Lederle administration; crossing paths with Provost in 1978 results in severance and entry into School of Education. Brooks: Dean of Women though tit inappropriate to have unmarried male as Dean of Students (1964); women's lives as students; changes in student life in 1960s; coping with "diversity and demonstrations;" creative work by Dean William Field (scapegoated by the Administration); Abbie Hoffman and Amy Carter. First Black football player and difficulties with racism. Radicalization of students in 1960s (including Hoffman); policing during student unrest and resentment between UMass police and state police. Marijuana use: alerting students to impending police busts. Eric the Rat (Eric Lee Walgren); Minksy, Krinsky, Finehurst, and Kaplan; instigators of student unrest; impact of women's movement and contraception. Staff culture on campus. Establishing UMass Boston; founding Hampshire College. Campus buildings and modern architecture (Visitors Center; Southwest; Orchard Hill). Growth of colleges and departments in 1950s-70s. Provosts Woodside and Tippo; improvements in student body and faculty; Lederle. Athletics, basketball, Calipari era; excess in athletics and expenditure.
