Alex Luten scrapbook

Description

This scrapbook belonged to South Bend African American WWII veteran Alex Luten who was part of the 340th U.S. Army Band. He was stationed at the Camp Sutton, North Carolina during the war, and most of the photos are from his time at this camp. The scrapbook documents routine Army life, including a few programs from the shows, candid photos of the off-duty soldiers, and information about the 340th Army Band's activities. The scrapbook was scanned as presented. Some of the photos are missing, as seen by captions without photos, and some photos without captions are included. Includes some unsourced clippings from military press. On some pages the photos overlap like roofing tiles, so these pages are scanned as multiple images to present a version of the page with each overlapped photo visible. The scrapbook was loaned for digitization purposes by South Bend resident Gladys Muhammad.
