Photograph of Neptune Small. He sits outside wearing a suit and bow tie. A hat sits on the ground near him.Born into slavery on Retreat Plantation on St. Simons Island, Georgia, Small was owned by Thomas Butler King. Small accompanied King's sons to battle during the Civil War. After the war Small gained his freedom and lived as a free man on Saint Simons Island for more than forty years.
