Description

Bill of sale dated July 27, 1841 for Negro slaves named Charley, Christopher, Dennis, Henry, and Levi sold by William H. Marriott of Baltimore City, Maryland to John Townsend Randall of Baltimore County, Maryland. The sale is in the amount of $700. Witnessed by Justice of the Peace Saml. (Samuel) Purviance on July 27 (who is certified by Baltimore County clerk Tho. (Thomas) Kell on August 3) and recorded by the late clerk of the Howard District of Anne Arundel County, Maryland Jno. L. (John L.) Moore on August 30, the document identifies the slaves by first name only: Charley, Christopher, Dennis, Henry, and Levi. (Editor's note: Why there is a record in Howard County when neither party lives there and why the Howard County record itself is unsigned are not known. Also, during this time period, Howard County was known as the Howard District of Anne Arundel County. Howard County was officially designated a county in 1851.)
