Description

Letter from Charlotte Cowles in Farmington, Connecticut, to her brother Samuel Cowles in Hartford, Connecticut. Charlotte expressed her sadness in seeing a man (an escaped slave) named Thomas leave with her father to go to Lake Ontario. Thomas and her father were taking a wagon to Albany where Thomas would then continue alone on the train. She reflected on how hard it was be for a person to be forced from their home, giving up comfort and their property. Thomas had asked his wife to sell or give away some of their belongings although she would not get the full value. He asked that she keep the dog because once they are reunited seeing the dog would be like "seeing an old friend." Charlotte was frustrated at not being able to help him either with his current situation or with his failing health.
