Photograph of screenwriter Dalton Trumbo and a group of friends at Los Angeles International Airport as Trumbo prepares to board a plane that will take him to a federal penitentiary. Pictured in the photo are, from left, Helen Clare Nelson Bessie, Alvah Bessie, Rev. W.M. Small of the New Light Baptist Church in Los Angeles, Dalton Trumbo, Herbert Biberman, Mrs. Carl Crain, Rev. Carl Crain of the Long Beach Christian Church, Margaret Larkin Maltz, Albert Maltz and Lester Cole. Trumbo, Bessie, Biberman, Cole and Maltz were among the Hollywood 10, a group of screenwriters and film makers who were subpoened in 1947 to testify before the House Committee on Un-american Activities. The 10 refused to answer the committee's questions and were charged with contempt. After lengthy legal wrangling, the 10 were convicted and sentenced to prison terms. This photograph was published in the California Eagle.
