Description

The first postcard shows the east side of the intersection of 4th & Main just before the Connor Hotel stole the preeminence away from the Keystone Hotel and the legendary House of Lords. This three-story building housed a bar, restaurant, gambling tables, and "ladies in waiting." In 1897, the lively establishment had introduced customers to ragtime piano played by the great black musician Scott Joplin. The House of Lords also played a role in launching Thomas Hart Benton¹s artistic career.The next view shows the same intersection on a typically busy day. The trolley clanks along its tracks, powered by the electrical wires overhead. Horse-drawn carriages and people are everywhere. The Connor Hotel has recently opened for business, and excitement is in the air. The third photograph must have been taken on a busy Saturday, when the streets of downtown Joplin would have been congested with horse-and-buggy rigs and the sidewalks clogged with pedestrians as far as the eye can see. People are dressed for the summer heat, with light-colored clothing, straw hats, and umbrellas. So are the buildings, with their brightly-striped awnings shading the storefronts. The Connor Hotel was in the flush of its youth. Hotel occupants as well as townspeople could grab something to read at Osterloh's Bookstore, settle in for a show at the theatre in the middle of the block, or quaff a beverage from Landauer and Company Wholesale Liquor.
