Sean Torrington was born in Flatbush to a Costa Rican immigrant mother and Black father. They moved from a large apartment on Linden Blvd to his grandparents’ house on East 32nd Street when he was 5 years old. He speaks about his grandmother’s journey from Costa Rica to Brooklyn where she worked as an entrepreneur to purchase the home on East 32nd before moving her husband and children to Brooklyn. Torrington currently resides in that same home. He speaks about his parents and his mother’s involvement with activism and remembers her emphasis on being black. Torrington remembers traveling around Brooklyn to parks and Coney Island on the bus with his grandfather. He mentions the enjoyment of going to the Kenmore Movie Theatre on Flatbush and Church, describing it as the “hood theatre.” He speaks about a field trip with an African Camp Youth Collective to watch Malcolm X. He talks about the Africa themed dancing, music and lessons at the Camp. He remembers attending P.S. 181 and speaks of experiences with teachers. He believes his favorite teacher in 5th grade teacher took to him because he was gay. He speaks about his experiences at Erasmus High School and Medgar Evers High School. Torrington was apart of the second graduating class at Medgar Evers when it was located on Eastern Parkway and Bedford Avenue. He speaks of the school as small and intimate but allowed him to be authentic and free. He speaks on not enjoying the beginning of senior year...
