"Memphis will become the jazz capital of the country Aug. 4 when the first Memphis Jazz Festival is held at the Mid-South Coliseum. -- Sponsors of the regional festival--direct outgrowth of the world-famous long-standing Newport Jazz Festival--yesterday said the 'magnificent facilities' of the coliseum were a great factor in bringing six top-ranking jazz figures here. They are: Jimmy Smith Trio, Dizzy Gillespie's All Stars, Ramsey Lewis Trio, Nina Simone, the Herbie Mann Octet and Cannonball Adderly's Quintet. All will come here after performing at Newport and other cities in the developing jazz concert concept. -- George Wein, who sponsored the first Newport Jazz Festival in 1954, and all since, was in Memphis yesterday to promote the Memphis Jazz Festival, latest in a spread of the regional festival concept he started in 1960..."
