Holograph, signed.On pages 1-2 of this manuscript, there is a letter by William Lloyd Garrison to Samuel Joseph May. Garrison has heard from Sydney Howard Gay that it will not be practicable to hold the annual meeting of the American Anti-Slavery Society in New York. The Executive Committee decided unanimously to hold it in Syracuse in May. Wendell Phillips promised to attend. Garrison hopes to see Gerrit Smith there. Garrison sends his sympathies to Samuel Joseph May regarding the destruction of his beautiful meeting house.On page 3 of this manuscript, there is a separate letter by Samuel May, Jr., to Samuel Joseph May, written on Tuesday, March 23, [1852]. Despite the loss of Samuel Joseph May's church, the Committee of the American Anti-Slavery Society hopes that arrangements may be made for the annual meeting in Syracuse.Merrill, Walter M.
