Description

This recording opens with an introduction of the program by Boyd Lewis. The first segment, which begins at 1:18, is a feature from reporter Dave Speights about civil rights leader Medgar Evers and a movie in production about him. The program features audio excerpts from Merlie Evers; Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young; actors Margaret Avery and Bob Hanna, and writer Ken Rotcop. The second segment, which begins at 10:00, is a feature about police concerns over terrorism. The program features audio excerpts from John Asholashi and Clarence Drum, chiefs of police in Connecticut; Federal Bureau of Investigation Director William Webster, and policeman Martin Delaureay at the 89th Conference of the International Association of Chiefs of Police held in Atlanta. The third segment, which begins at 20:56, is a feature about a nuclear freeze referendum in Atlanta to express concern over the buildup of nuclear weapons. The program features audio excerpts from referndum manager Tim Johnson, Atlanta City Council members John Lewis and Mary Davis; and Southeastern Legal Foundation members Allan Hirons, Dillard Munford and Ben Blackburn. The program ends with a sign off by Boyd Lewis."Southwind" was a radio program about the issues, people, and culture of the South that aired on WABE-FM, Atlanta's public radio station. The series, which aired from 1980 to 1987, was conceived, produced, and reported by journalist Boyd Lewis.
