well to build the world’s largest corporation. Each of these southern corporations has a similar story. They represent a mix of technology, ideas, and southern ingenuity. Thanks to your years at the University of Arkansas you are well equipped to deal with this challenging new world. There are some areas of the South where when visitors admire the moon, locals respond, “Oh, but you should have seen it before the Wawuh.” Rather than looking back, you are facing the future. The State of Arkansas and this great university are pioneering the transformation of our region from an agricultural economy to one that is based on technology and ideas. This transformation has been strengthened by significant social change in the years since the Civil Rights Movement. The legacy of the Little Rock Nine has clearly forged a new day in Arkansas, and these changes offer a beacon of hope for both our region and our nation. The American South has always been a region of change. From slavery to the Civil War to reconstruction to Jim Crow to Civil Rights to the Sunbelt, the South has witnessed profound changes that today come with increasing speed. New populations of Hispanic, Asian, and retirees from the North are reshaping communities in Arkansas and throughout the region. As these changes come, we must understand that the economies of the future will be based on ideas and technology.
