Description
This is a draft of an act for imposing a duty on the importation of slaves into Massachusetts, an attempt by legislators to curtail or eliminate the slave trade. This was probably written some time in March 1767, to take effect from April 1767 to April 1768. This act is very similar to a draft bill, [20 March] 1767. (See the online presentation of the draft bill). From the Bowdoin-Temple papers in the Winthrop family papers This act is comprised of 3 pages, 1 attachment, and 1 page of numbers and sums; (5 pages total).
