Description

Research in ProgressIllustration for a Knopf edition (unpublished) of Carl van Vechten's controversial novel, Nigger Heaven, originally published in 1926. In the foreground, two figures hold one another, as if dancing. A female partner (at left) faces backwards, wearing a blue dress. A male partner (at right) faces forward, wearing a black tuxedo. In the background, at left, a brown sculpture of a head, or a mask, accented with blue dots, rests on a pedestal. Image is framed in a graphite rectangle, perhaps indicating framing or the margins.
