Description

This photocopy of a document records Henry P. Osborn's application to the Town of Brookhaven Trustees for manumission of his slave, Reuben. The Trustees review the application and note that Reuben is not older than forty-five years and should be capable of independently supporting himself. Reuben's manumission came during the period of gradual manumission in New York State, where the institution of slavery would over time cease to exist in New York. The second page transcription was typed by Diana Dayton in 2001.
