Mary B. Martin (1877-1939) was the first African-American woman elected to the Cleveland Board of Education, becoming a school board member in 1930. She served two terms, and was elected for a third in 1939, the year she died. The Raleigh, N.C., native was born to parents who were former slaves. The family moved to Cleveland in 1886. Martin attended Rockwell School, Central High School and Cleveland Normal Training School. She taught in Arkansas and Alabama before teaching in the Cleveland public schools, beginning in the 1920s afer her children had grown. Mary B. Martin Elementary School is located at 8200 Brookline Avenue in Cleveland.
