This issue of Mosaic contains writing samples from South Boston High School students of the Reading/Writing and Bilingual Programs, as well as the Urban Scholars course at the University of Massachusetts Boston. The issue is arranged into thematic areas: Language, Personal History, At Home/In the World, Neighborhood, School, Work, War, and Adult/Child. Part 1, Language, offers quotations on the nature of language from students’ perspectives. Part 2, Personal History, includes autobiographies focused on students’ family stories. Laura Sullivan writes about her early family life, moving in with an aunt after the death of the mother, and how her concept of family has changed as a result. Hazel Cannon writes about growing up in an adopted family. Dennis Lynch and Raymond Porch share the stories of each of their mothers’ struggle with cancer. Other excerpts from students describe the origins of the authors’ names and inspirational figures, both family and writers. Part 3, At Home/In the World, includes short writing samples showing how students engage in the world and whether or not they feel like they have a sense of control. Part 4, Neighborhood, features short writing samples related to a student's neighborhood, including visiting the marketplace, racial tensions and trouble, and feeling uncomfortable in a strange neighborhood. Part 5, School, relates to education. Chamnan Phat describes elementary education in Cambodia and starting school in Boston as a Cambodian refugee.
