Picnic basket with dishes used by Beneta and John McHie in Minneapolis, Minnesota, circa 1950s. The basket is made of woven ash wood strips with a wooden lid attached by two hinges. It has two wood handles attached at front and back, and a matching woven wood tray rests on metal brackets inside the lid. The basket contains three stackable plastic cups, a set of five divided plastic plates and one set of six divided plates in a mesh bag. Beneta McHie, a Saint Paul-born woman from a prominent African American family, was heavily involved in the education of women and minorities and social justice issues.
