Records collected by the Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission on interracial crime in Mississippi. The file consists of letters between Erle Johnston and C. E. Breaseale, Superintendent of the Mississippi State Penitentiary in Parchman. Johnston wrote Breaseale seeking information about white people convicted of crimes against African Americans to respond to charges that whites in Mississippi weren't punished for interracial crimes. The file ends with a six page report of white criminals, their crimes against African Americans, and their punishments.The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata.
