This image is part of the Arthur Witman Collection. A native of Lebanon, Pennsylvania, Witman began his career in photography during four years of service in the U. S. Army Air Force, 1923-1927. He spent the following years working as an aerial photograph mapper in Texas and teaching in Chanute, Illinois. He worked as a photographer for the St. Louis Post Dispatch newspaper from October 1932 until his retirement in 1969. in addition to local news stories, Witman covered Winston Churchill's 'Iron Curtain' speech, and the presidential campaigns of Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower and Adlai Stevenson for the Post. He also documented the construction of the St. Louis Arch from 1963 to 1967. After his retirement Witman taught a photography class at Southern Illinois University and a workshop for the Winona School of Professional Photography. He died in St. Louis in 2012.
