Paine, Seth

Description

Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger. This letter was printed in the Liberator of July 9, 1847 (Vol. XVII, no. 28) and titled "The Liberty Party at the West."Seth Paine writes to William LLoyd Garrison describing his withdrawal from the Liberty Party due to its hostility "towards those who honestly differ in opinion with them". He also details the dominance of priests in the antislavery movement in the West and shares a story about how one man lost an election because a minister warned "Christians not to vote for him, because he is not a believer in the Divine authenticity of the Christian religion." Paine shares his interest in Garrison's views of "non-resistance, or 'no government,' and plan[s] for abolishing slavery, as well [as] those relative to the Sabbath and Chritianity." He warns Garrison that he is "represented as [an] infidel by Liberty party men" and sends him $2 for a one-year subscription to the Liberator. Paine also asks Garrison about any publications he has on other subjects (listed above) and the early history of the antislavery movement.
