Description

George W. White (1931-2011) was a judge and lawyer. The Duquesne, Pennsylvania, native enrolled in Baldwin-Wallace College in 1948. He graduated from the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law in 1955, and became a practicing attorney. He was a Ward 13 councilman for five years in the 1960s. He gained a seat on Common Pleas in 1968, serving until 1979. He later became Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court of Northern Ohio. White founded the United Black Fund of Greater Cleveland in 1981 to support social organizations serving the city’s African-American community, according to the Encyclopedia of Cleveland History. He also helped create the First Club of Cleveland, the Cleveland Browns Foundation and the federal courthouse.
