View of Ralph Long (center), a civil rights activist and community leader in the Vine City neighborhood of Atlanta, and other unidentified individuals at an appreciation banquet in his honor, in Atlanta, Georgia.Ralph Abbott Long, Sr. (d. 1998), a native Atlantan, was an athlete, educator and activist. He was the Georgia tennis champion from 1929 to 1934 and the Southern champion from 1931 to 1933. He later founded a tennis league for African Americans-the American Tennis Association. He was also a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and worked to raise money for students who had been arrested during sit-ins in the 1960s. He was the first director of the Kennedy School and Center, a community facility with social service offices and recreation programs, located near the Atlanta University Center. Long was also a principal, teacher and coach in the Atlanta Public School system.
